Helpful tips to take into the next pandemic

Up until this point, most of us have enjoyed a pretty convenient lifestyle. The coronavirus pandemic turned this world on its side and most people were left unknowing how to cope with the onslaught of sudden changes. While a lot of changes have had to be made to help stop the spread of the virus, there are some bright sides we can look at.

All of our coronavirus prepping has led us to a lot of good resources and given us a solid knowledge base for SHTF scenarios. Here are some helpful tips we can take with us into the next pandemic or crisis:

1. Plan for the worst

This means planning for a complete disruption of life as you know it. This can include food shortages, low health supplies, loss of energy forms and down communication lines amongst other things. Make sure that you will not be caught off guard if the meat in stores is gone for three months or you are unable to get in contact with a family member who lives in a different state. Having a contingency plan that works for the worst case scenarios will benefit you immensely and not leave you gasping for solutions.

2. Make a few different plans

While it’s a good idea to plan for the worst case scenario, most crisis situations will be a little more watered down with only a few things going wrong. Have a plan prepared for multiple scenarios for things like: another pandemic, civil unrest or an attack on your family. These are situations that have already happened, so the chances of them happening again are higher. Just like your coronavirus prepping might have included stocking up on non-perishable food items, a prep for an attack against your home might include a better security system.

3. Get your family involved

While some people might be tempted to leave their family out of the ins and outs of their prepping, it is in your best interest to at least go over the highlights with them. This way everyone is on the same page. The most important things to communicate with your family is the part they will play in the plan, location meet-ups and “to-go” triggers, or what signs they should look for that indicate the plan has been set into motion.

4. Start learning basic survival skills

This tip can help you with all of your plans. After all, if you grow your own produce, then it will not matter if grocery stores are in short supply. All of our coronavirus prepping has also taught us that the more we can rely on ourselves versus others the better. Aside from just learning some gardening tips, some other basic survival skills you may want to brush up on is storing fresh food, the water purification process, how to pack a survival kit and what household emergency supplies to keep on hand.

5. Utilize other available resources

You don’t have to be all alone in this. There are a lot of great resources that you can use to better prepare yourself for crisis scenarios. Ready.gov or family survival planning’s website can be useful to come up with ideas of what you should be packing, preparing for and plans that you can customize to meet you and your family’s needs. The important part is to not overthink anything and this all does not have to be a difficult process. Simply being prepared and keeping a few items on hand will set you up for a good future.
