When people think of preppers they think of paranoid people that stockpile food and supplies that they might need if SHTF, but these are the people that would actually be in trouble if SHTf for real. Gear and endless amount of supplies are useless unless you have the skills to go along with it because things don’t always go as planned.
Here are a couple of examples of why you need more skills and less stuff:
- Alcohol
Alcohol has been used for lot of things for a long time. Drinking, sterilizing wounds, and for trade. Lets just say SHTF and you have two cases of vodka that you are bugging out with just in case you get yourself into any of the situations above, but when its gone, its gone and what do you do then? What if you learned how to make it instead so you didn’t have to worry about running out? You don’t have to stop there, you can move onto beer and whiskey. - Medicine
So you have a stockpile of medicine, but just like alcohol that will only get you so far. Learning how to make your own medicine will keep you from having to carry it, worry about running out and you can also use it for bartering purposes. - Hunting and gathering
Tracking animals take skills and and trapping them takes even more skill. Once you do catch the animal that you are hunting, do you know how to properly butcher it and store the meat? There are also a lot of uses for animals outside of just eating it. - Homesteading
Tracking, trapping and fishing take a lot of time and energy, but gardening and farming are things that you can also live off of. The past couple of generations have lost the knowledge of gardening and farming. Learning these skills will allow you to raise farm animals, grow crops, store food, make food such as butter and cheese. - Self Defense
Knowing how to gather and store stuff won’t get you far when it comes to defending yourself. Learn how to fight, shoot, and take care of your weapons for when you need to defend you and your family. You can’t always rely on 911 when SHTF. - Electronics and communication
Electronics can easily be transferred and made into other things. You can make a battery out of a lemon and an orange clock with the fruits and vegetables that you are growing and the electronics that you have brought along with you.
If you are looking for a place to learn these skills, the internet has more information than any other source. Here are some of the best prepper books, websites, and gear related blogs within the prepper community.
