Women and Firearms: The Truth You Should Know

The main reason that usually women resort to owning guns is to protect themselves. Roughly about 12 percent of women own a gun as opposed to nearly three times as many men , meaning a disproportionate number of gun-owning civilians are male.

If you are one of the many women that has purchased a gun or are looking to purchase one, here are a few essential facts that you should know:

  • There is no such thing as having too much ammo! Most people can go through 100 rounds or more in a single target practice.
  • Don’t limit your practice time! Take classes that will challenge your shooting skills. Firing a gun can be a lot of pressure in the moment, so knowing exactly how it feels to handle a firearm will help in a life or death situation.
  • A shotgun could be at the top of your list when it comes to purchasing your first firearm. Once you have purchased the model you want, get to the closest range and practice! When it comes to power, a shotgun can’t be beat.
  • Don’t fall into the trap of buying the smallest gun at the store for the sake of stealth. A larger gun is actually more comfortable to shoot and will fire more accurately.
  • Learn how to clean and disassemble your own gun. This means being able to dismantle it, clean each part, and put it back together piece by piece.
  • Your safety and the safety of others is your essential when handling a firearm.
  • The gun shouldn’t be your go-to when it comes to security. It should actually be your last resort. Think of security in terms of layers.
  • If you choose to carry your concealed handgun, practice drawing it from its holster or from the location where it is concealed.
  • It’s a good idea to keep an extra magazine in your purse, the glove compartment of your car, or wherever it is accessible to you.
  • Open carry can make you an obvious target, which is why experts prefer their sidearms concealed. According to a study by National Shooting Sports Foundation, 42 percent of women have a concealed carry permit.
  • Your life should never depend on a gun. If you are too afraid to shoot a gun, it’s probably not the best idea to buy one. If you are insistent on buying a gun, buy one that you know you are comfortable with handling and firing.
  • Don’t underestimate your ability to carry a large caliber gun.

Join the movement and let’s increase the percentage of women that are carrying a gun. Everyone is entitled to their protection.
